Man charged over West Ham player knife attack

A 25-YEAR-OLD man has been charged in connection with the stabbing of West Ham United defender Calum Davenport at the weekend, police said today.

Worrel Whitehurst, of Finsley Walk, Derby, is charged with causing grievious bodily harm with intent after the 26-year footballer was knifed at his mother's home in Bedford early on Saturday.

Davenport, a former England Under-21 international, was stabbed in both legs during the attack and underwent emergency surgery for his injuries on Saturday morning.

Whitehurst has also been charged with causing actual bodily harm to Davenport's 49-year-old mother, as well as driving while disqualified and being in possession of a bladed article.

He is due to appear at Bedford Magistrates' Court later today.

Police said the player is in a serious but stable condition at Bedford South Wing hospital, while his mother is said to be recovering well.

A 19-year-old man also arrested after the incident has been released on police bail pending further inquiries, police said.
