Man runs onto field during US-Belgium match
A man ran onto the field during the World Cup match between the United States and Belgium on Tuesday, briefly interrupting the second round game.
The man, an Italian with a history of such stunts, stopped the game in the 16th minute. He ran around on the grass with a blue Superman t-shirt with "#SAVE FAVELAS CHILDREN" and "#CIRO VIVE" printed on it.
The man, Mario Ferri, also ran onto the field during a match at the last World Cup, interrupting the semifinal match between Germany and Spain.
On Tuesday, Ferri ran unimpeded for several seconds, pulling down on his t-shirt to better reveal his message. He was eventually escorted off the field by security.
The #CiroVive hashtag has been used by people in support of Ciro Esposito, a Napoli fan who was shot in May during fan violence before the Italian Cup final. He died last week.
Also, Brazilian authorities have been criticized for not doing more to improve conditions in the country's impoverished slums, called favelas in Brazil, while spending billions on the World Cup and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
