Maradona likely in Shanghai next month
ARGENTINE great Diego Maradona is being lined up for a trip to Shanghai for a meeting with Shanghai Shenhua boss Zhu Jun - and possible footballing opportunities, according to Sina.com yesterday.
The Chinese portal quoted an unidentified source who had previously introduced Maradona to Zhu.
The website claimed that if talks were positive then the entire coaching staff of Argentina's national team at the South Africa World Cup earlier this year would be flown in.
Zhu refused to divulge anything but did not deny the story.
"It is not proper to reveal anything right now," Zhu said when contacted by Shanghai Daily yesterday. "The website reporter might have overheard me while I was on the phone."
Shanghai Shenhua is 10 points behind leader Shandong Luneng with five games left and there has been no talk yet of the 73-year-old Serbian coach Miroslav Blazevic extending his contract.
Zhu refused to discuss the issue when quizzed about the status of the coach.
Maradona has been invited by the Red Cross Society of China for charity-related activities. He flies out of Buenos Aires on November 2 and will spend the next 10 days in four cities.
Shanghai was not originally on his travel schedule.
