Marchisio brace fires Juve past Milan
A LATE brace from Claudio Marchisio sent Juventus back alongside Udinese at the top of the Italian Serie A after deservedly defeating champion AC Milan 2-0 at its atmospheric new arena in Turin on Sunday.
The Italy midfielder scored his first with a lucky ricochet with three minutes to go after playing a one-two with Mirko Vucinic before making the game safe in injury time, firing a 25-meter volley through goalkeeper Christian Abbiati's legs.
"We deserved to score a long time before," Juventus coach Antonio Conte told Italy's Sky Sports TV. "Our intensity and approach were brilliant. We dominated possession, which was very important against a side like Milan, but the best thing that came from tonight was the way we played as a team."
The once mighty Turin side, seventh the last two terms, is unbeaten under new boss Conte, a former Juventus midfielder, with three wins and two draws.
Milan - missing forwards Alexandre Pato and Robinho, plus midfielders Gennaro Gattuso and Mathieu Flamini - is six points back on five points.
Having won the Serie A in its first year under coach Massimiliano Allegri last season, Milan has only managed one win in its opening five matches this campaign.
"This was our worst performance of the year," Allegri said. "We didn't play at the right rhythm and gave the ball away too much. We played badly both in defense and attack."
Earlier, Udinese beat Bologna 2-0, while 2-0 victories for Cagliari and Palermo over Lecce and Siena, respectively, helped the island teams join Napoli within a point of the leaders.
A Sebastian Giovinco brace helped Parma beat Genoa 3-1 and Lazio grabbed the three points at Fiorentina thanks to a late Miloslav Klose header in a 2-1 win.
In Germany, Werder Bremen suffered its second defeat of the season, losing 2-3 at Hanover 96 on Sunday to stay three points behind leader Bayern Munich.
In the day's only other match, Schalke 04's Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored twice in its 2-1 win at Hamburg SV to lift it to fourth on 15 points, four behind Bayern.
Second-placed Werder, on 16 points, had scorer Marko Arnautovic sent off with a red card in the 78th minute for stepping on Sergio Pinto.
While Bayern's players spent the day sunning themselves and drinking beer at their city's Oktoberfest, Bremen was felled by a hat-trick from 24-year-old Norwegian forward Mohammed Abdellaoue.
