Marseille's Remy has heart problem
OLYMPIQUE Marseille's new signing Loic Remy has a heart problem, the French Ligue 1 champion said on Friday.
Marseille, which also said it is set to sign France striker Andre-Pierre Gignac from Toulouse, made the announcement just a day after Remy joined for a reported 15 million euros (US$19 million) fee from Nice.
"We've decided to not play Loic Remy tomorrow (against Lorient) because MRIs yesterday evening showed a small problem," President Jean-Claude Dassier said on Friday. "The news this morning is encouraging but we made this decision because the player's health is what matters most."
The medical examination revealed a heart "abnormality," explained Christophe Baudot, the club's doctor.
"It's a mechanical problem," Baudot said. "More tests are scheduled for Monday so that we can give clear answers to Loic. He will play only when all the doubts are removed."
Remy, who has a five-year contract with his new club, said he never felt any specific pain throughout his career. "I can't wait to be done with this and show on the pitch how proud I am to be here," Remy said.
Marseille is third from bottom and without a point after losing its first two matches of the season.
Meanwhile, Liverpool put Alberto Aquilani out of his Anfield misery yesterday when it agreed to loan the Italian international to Juventus for the remainder of the season.
Aquilani joined Liverpool from AS Roma a year ago for around 17 million pounds (US$26.43 million) but barely featured under previous manager Rafa Benitez and subsequently missed out on a place in the Italy squad for the World Cup.
Liverpool announced the deal on its Website yesterday, saying it was subject to Aquilani passing a medical in Italy tomorrow.
Juventus also signed Serbia winger Milos Krasic from CSKA Moscow on a four-year contract for a fee of 15 million euros, the Italian Serie A club said yesterday.
The 25-year old winger was named Serbia's 2009 footballer of the year following impressive performances in World Cup qualifying but failed to reproduce that kind of form in the finals in South Africa.
