McClaren resurfaces as Forest coach
FORMER England manager Steve McClaren made a return to English soccer yesterday when he was named manager at Championship (second division) side Nottingham Forest.
It will be the first time he has managed in England since his spell in charge of the national team ended in humiliation with the country failing to qualify for Euro 2008.
He signed a three-year deal at Forest, which came close to promotion to the English Premier League this season but lost in the playoff semifinals. He succeeds Billy Davies, who was sacked on Sunday.
"The club moved quickly to secure his services as it is rare for a manager and coach of his undoubted calibre to be available," Forest Chief Executive Mark Arthur said in a statement on the club website.
After being sacked by England in 2007, McClaren took up a post at Twente Enschede and steered the club to its first Dutch title in 2010.
Last year he became the first English coach at the helm of a German Bundesliga club when he took over at VfL Wolfsburg but lasted just nine months in the job as the 2009 German champion became involved in the battle to avoid relegation.
He was sacked in February.
He was assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in 1999-2001 before being appointed manager at Middlesbrough, where the 50-year-old won the 2004 League Cup.
Notable season
Also, Alex McLeish resigned as manager of Birmingham City on Sunday to round off a notable season where the club won its first trophy for 48 years but was then relegated from the Premier League.
"Acting chairman Peter Pannu received an e-mail resignation from McLeish earlier today while away on business in Amsterdam," the club said in a statement.
McLeish, a former central defender who served Aberdeen and Scotland for many years, established his managerial reputation at Motherwell, Hibernian and Rangers before taking over as Scotland manager in January 2007. He moved south to replace Steve Bruce at Birmingham in November of that year.
This year Birmingham shocked Arsenal in the League Cup final but the success was followed by dramatic decline in its league form.
