Meeting with Beckham cancelled after fans stampede, 5 injured
British soccer star David Beckham's visit to Shanghai's Tongji University this afternoon triggered a stampede of enthusiastic fans, injuring five people.
The five injured included two security guards, two faculty members and an overseas student, the university said.
A training session with the university's soccer team and Beckham, scheduled for 2pm, was canceled and he left the scene.
A policeman was seen lying on the ground with blood on his face.
Nearly 1,000 people waited for Beckham and students broke the door of the gymnasium and got past a wall of security guards and policemen, causing the stampede.
The injured have been sent to a local hospital.
