Messi hit by bottle as Barca edges Valencia

VALENCIA will banish a fan who hit Barcelona forward Lionel Messi on the head with a plastic bottle on Sunday for life once they have been identified, the club said yesterday.

Messi was celebrating Barcelona’s 94th-minute winner with his teammates near the corner flag when someone threw the bottle from the stands and it struck him on the head.

The Argentina captain was examined by a member of Barcelona’s medical staff and did not appear to be hurt, giving the thumbs-up as he walked off the pitch after the final whistle.

“Valencia CF regret and condemn the isolated incident in the game against FC Barcelona, in which a small, uncapped bottle of water was thrown from the stands at opposition player Lionel Messi,” Valencia said on its website.

“The club will endeavor to locate the person who threw the bottle and they will be banned for life from the Mestalla,” they added. “Valencia CF operate a zero tolerance policy on such actions and rigorously enforce all security measures set out by legislation.”

Barcelona snatched a vital 1-0 win thanks to Sergio Busquets’s volleyed winner deep into stoppage time. The Spanish international pounced after Diego Alves had made a great save from Neymar’s header to ensure Barca close to within two points of leader Real Madrid.

In England, Tottenham Hotspur came from a goal down to beat Everton 2-1 with goals from Christian Eriksen and Roberto Soldado moving Spurs up to seventh with 20 points.

Everton’s Kevin Mirallas produced a stunning strike from 20 meters to open the scoring at White Hart Lane in Sunday’s clash between the two Europa League representatives.

Tottenham equalized six minutes later when Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard palmed Harry Kane’s shot into the path of Eriksen, who kept his composure to score.

In first half stoppage time, Soldado scored his first league goal since March when he raced on to Aaron Lennon’s astute pass and powered a shot past Howard. It was Everton’s first loss in six league matches.

In Italy, Andrea Pirlo and Miralem Pjanic provided the moments of magic to inspire leading Serie A duo Juventus and AS Roma to battling victories with the gap between the sides remaining at three points.

Pirlo scored with aplomb deep into injury time to give Juventus a 2-1 win over an unfortunate Torino in an intense Turin derby.
