Messi off to a good start

Lionel Messi started the Spanish league right where he left off last season, and that鈥檚 not a good sign for Real Madrid鈥檚 weakened squad. Messi, the league鈥檚 top scorer last season, opened this year鈥檚 campaign by scoring two goals in the team鈥檚 3-0 win over Alaves at Camp Nou on Saturday. Substitute Philippe Coutinho scored Barca鈥檚 other goal. Madrid was likely feeling Cristiano Ronaldo鈥檚 absence off the field as well, as a relatively small crowd of 48,446 was at the Bernabeu for Sunday鈥檚 game, the team鈥檚 worst attendance since before Ronaldo arrived in 2009. Gareth Bale scored and helped set up Dani Carvajal鈥檚 goal in the 2-0 win at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium against Getafe.
