Milan grabs lead, Real stays on course

A DAY after the latest arrests in a match-fixing investigation, Serie A action resumed on Tuesday with AC Milan taking the lead following a 2-0 win at Cagliari.

Milan went ahead after four minutes with an own goal by Cagliari defender Francesco Pisano, who was attempting to prevent Antonio Nocerino from redirecting a cross from Robinho into an empty net.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic then sealed the match on the hour mark, taking a pass from Robinho and chipping the ball over charging Cagliari goalkeeper Michael Agazzi with the tips of his toes.

Ibrahimovic's 11th goal of the season left him alongside Atalanta's German Denis as the Serie A's leading scorers.

Milan moved one point in front of Juventus.

"It was important to get three points and end the year in the best manner possible," Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "Tomorrow we'll see what the others do."

Allegri once again defied Silvio Berlusconi, lining up Robinho alongside Ibrahimovic instead of Alexandre Pato like the Milan president has suggested. It proved to be the right decision as the Brazil forward sprinted past two defenders to set up Milan's opener. He then set up Ibrahimovic's goal.

Earlier, Fiorentina drew 0-0 at Siena, moving both clubs one more spot above the relegation zone.

In Spain, Real Madrid eased into the last 16 of the Copa del Rey with a 5-1 win over third-tier Ponferradina, while Sevilla, Espanyol and Mallorca also advanced after victories on Tuesday.

Jose Callejon led defending champion Madrid's attack in the second-leg match, marking his third straight start with the opening and closing goals at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium to complete a 7-1 aggregate victory.

Callejon was played through by Mesut Oezil in the 25th minute and used his speed to go alone toward goalkeeper Orlando Quintano, who was slow to react as a low shot went past.

Nuri Sahin, getting a rare start with coach Jose Mourinho resting regulars Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso and Angel di Maria, scored his first goal since joining in the offseason by heading in Oezil's 44th-minute corner.

Quintano spilled a rebound after saving Esteban Granero's freekick for Raphael Varane to score the third in the 49th.

Second-half substitute Frederic Kanoute scored from a penalty and a header inside eight minutes to give Sevilla a 2-1 victory over San Roque, a day after club president Jose Maria del Nido was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison on embezzlement charges.
