Milan just one point away from scudetto

AC Milan moved within one point of the Italian Serie A title with a 1-0 win over Bologna yesterday.

French midfielder Mathieu Flamini scored in the eighth minute at the San Siro, taking a pass from Robinho and dribbling past two defenders before finding the target from his own rebound.

Milan can now clinch its 18th Italian scudetto - its first since 2004 - with either a win or a draw at AS Roma this weekend.

With three matches remaining, Milan is eight points clear of five-time defending champion Inter Milan and nine ahead of Napoli.

On Saturday, Inter beat Cesena 2-1 and Napoli edged Genoa 1-0.

Regardless of how its rivals fare, Milan needs only one point in its remaining three matches to clinch the title, since it holds the tiebreakers over both Inter and Napoli.

Udinese's Champions League chances were hurt with a 2-5 loss at Fiorentina.

Fourth-place Lazio, which hosts Juventus today, remained one point in front of Udinese in the race for the final Champions League berth.

Elsewhere, it was: Catania 2, Cagliari 0; Chievo Verona 1, Lecce 0; Parma 3, Palermo 1; and Sampdoria 3, Brescia 3.

Missed a chance

In Spain, Barcelona missed a chance to stretch its advantage over Real Madrid and virtually wrap up a third straight La Liga title when it surrendered the lead and lost 1-2 at Real Sociedad on Saturday.

The result left Barcelona on 88 points from 34 matches.

With Real facing the task of overturning a 0-2 deficit in tomorrow's Champions League semifinal second leg at the Nou Camp, Real coach Jose Mourinho rested key players.

His team, without top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo among others, was upset 2-3 at home by relegation-threatened Real Zaragoza. It stayed eight points behind Barcelona.

Real's city rival Atletico Madrid stayed on course to qualify for the Europa League it won last season when Sergio Aguero scored in a 1-0 win at 10-man Deportivo la Coruna.

Atletico has 52 points, one more than Athletic Bilbao, which was at eighth-placed Espanyol today.
