Milan on course for scudetto
LEADER AC Milan took another big step towards the Serie A title - its first since 2004 - with a 3-0 home win over relegation-threatened Sampdoria on Saturday while troubled champion Inter Milan lost.
Third-placed Inter is now eight points adrift of Milan with five games left after a shock 0-2 defeat at lowly Parma, meaning its hopes of a sixth straight scudetto are almost over.
Second-placed Napoli can cut the gap back to three points with a win over Udinese yesterday.
Sixth-placed AS Roma, taken over by an American consortium on Friday, suffered a 2-3 home defeat by Palermo, with striker Abel Hernandez scoring twice in the last six minutes for the visitors.
At the San Siro, Milan took the lead against beleaguered Sampdoria through Clarence Seedorf on 20 minutes and striker Antonio Cassano sealed the win from the spot early in the second half after a contested handball before Robinho grabbed a third.
"We all have to continue fighting as a team," Milan coach Massimo Allegri said. "We can't drift off and we have to stay focused because things can change in five games. We had to win tonight and we did so."
Sebastien Giovinco scored the first for Parma against Inter in the 35th minute and Amauri sealed the result five minutes from time.
"We have five games to go and 15 points to play for," Inter coach Leonardo said. "Eight points is a lot to get back, but it is still our objective and we have to worry about how we are playing."
