Milan wins Super Cup in China

AC Milan earned the early bragging rights by beating city rival Inter Milan 2-1 in the Italian Super Cup played at a packed Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing last night.

Milan, which ended Inter's five-year reign as Italian champion by winning the scudetto in May, came from behind thanks to former Inter striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring on the hour and Kevin-Prince Boateng netting nine minutes later.

Dutchman Wesley Sneijder, heavily linked in the media with a move to Manchester United, grabbed the opener for Inter.

The defeat was an inauspicious start for new Inter coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who replaced Brazilian Leonardo during the close season.

After an even battle, Sneijder broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute for the Nerazzurri with a powerful shot from the edge of the box to beat Milan 'keeper Christian Abbiati.

Ibrahimovic equalized in the 61st when the tall Swedish striker headed Clarence Seedorf's pinpoint center into the empty net at the far post.

Kevin-Prince netted home the winner on 69 minutes when he slid in a rebound after substitute forward Pato's sharp diagonal shot hit the near post.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri started with a 4-3-3 formation, while Gasperini opted for 3-6-1 starting eleven.

The Italian Super Cup will be held at the 80,000-capacity Bird's Nest, also called the National Stadium, for the next two seasons before the start of the Serie A. The Super Cup is the curtain-raiser to the new Serie A season and pits the previous year's league champion against the Italian Cup winner.

In Tianjin, Real Madrid wrapped up its pre-season tour of China by comfortably sweeping past Chinese Super League side Tianjin Teda 6-0 at the Water Drop Olympic Stadium.

Early goals from Brazilian Kaka and Argentine Angel Di Maria set the scene for the Spanish powerhouse. After a disappointing end to the first half, Los Blancos overwhelmed their opponents in the second, with Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain making it 3-0 in the 53rd.

Further strikes by substitutes Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and a brace from French forward Karim Benzema completed the rout.

Jose Mourinho made nine changes from the side that overwhelmed Guangzhou Evergrande 7-1 in the previous friendly with Tomas Mejias handed a start in goal.
