Milner strike powers Aston Villa to victory
ENGLAND midfielder James Milner scored to give Aston Villa a 2-1 win over Wigan and increase his team's chances of finishing in the English Premier League top four.
Milner gathered a botched clearance on the edge of the area and hit a shot through a crowded area for a 63rd-minute winner on Tuesday.
The victory keeps Villa unbeaten in the league in 2010.
An own-goal by Wigan midfielder James McCarthy had given Villa a 25th-minute lead at DW Stadium but Gary Caldwell equalized two minutes later.
Villa stayed in seventh place but victory kept it within three points of Tottenham, which occupies the last Champions League spot, with a game in hand.
Manchester City is sixth on 50 points and Liverpool fifth on 51. Villa and City have two games in hand on Liverpool.
Defeat left Wigan just four points above the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Hull City hired Ian Dowie as manager yesterday to save the club from relegation.
Hull is three points from safety and Dowie has nine matches to keep the northeast club in the top division, starting with a crucial meeting with last-place Portsmouth on Saturday.
Hull said Dowie has been appointed on a "short-term contract" and will be assisted by Steve Wigley and Tim Flowers.
Also, Portsmouth faces almost-certain relegation from the Premier League after the financially stricken club was docked nine points yesterday for being forced to seek bankruptcy protection.
Portsmouth, which has spent most of the season propping up the table, is now 17 points from safety.
Having amassed debts of US$130 million, the south-coast club became the first Premier League club to enter financial administration.
