Misfiring Sevilla gives coach the boot

LA Liga's bottom club Xerez grabbed a last-minute equalizer to draw 1-1 at Sevilla on Tuesday that led to the ouster of coach Manolo Jimenez.

Sevilla sacked Jimenez after a run of seven matches without a win. The team announced his dismissal on its Website.

The draw prevented fifth-placed Sevilla from climbing back into the top four of the Spanish league.

Nacho Oria and Ramon Orellana, members of Jimenez's coaching staff, will oversee training while the team looks for a new coach.

Spanish media reported that former Spain coach Luis Aragones was a candidate, as was Michael Laudrup of Denmark.

Jimenez took over at Sevilla in October 2007 after Juande Ramos joined Tottenham in the English Premier League.

Leandro Gioda's deflected shot after a long throw-in cancelled out Frederic Kanoute's 63rd-minute penalty, and led to a barrage of whistles from the home fans when the game finished soon after at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

It was a lame performance from Sevilla which appears to be suffering a hangover from its surprise Champions League exit to CSKA Moscow.

Sevilla stays fifth on 45 points, one point short of Real Mallorca in the Champions League qualification places.

Real Madrid has 68 points and visits neighbors Getafe today. Barcelona is second on goal difference and will host Osasuna.

Earlier, Deportivo Coruna had two men sent off and conceded a goal deep into injury time to go down 1-2 at Sporting Gijon, suffering another blow to its fading Champions League aspirations.

Deportivo Coruna remains seventh in the standings with 42 points, behind Athletic Bilbao on goal difference.

The visitors had goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia sent off after only 11 minutes at the Molinon, for tripping Mate Bilic outside the area, and Sporting's Croatian striker put the hosts in front with an opportunist strike in the 30th minute.

Deportivo rallied after the break and Adrian Lopez sprinted clear to level the north-coast derby only for defender Alberto Lopo to concede a disputed injury-time penalty.

Lopo was sent off and Diego Castro struck Sporting's winner from the spot. Faltering Depor has only won once in its last five outings.
