Monaco signs Carvalho, Falcao is next big target
Monaco's preparations for the 2013-14 campaign continued on Tuesday when the newly-promoted French Ligue 1 club signed center back Ricardo Carvalho from Real Madrid on a one-year deal.
The 35-year-old former Portugal international had joined Real from Chelsea in 2010, having won the Champions League under Jose Mourinho for Porto against Monaco in the 2004 final.
Carvalho, whose arrival as a free agent was announced by the Ligue 2 champion on its website, was out of favor at Real where he played eight La Liga games this season.
The principality club has already signed midfielders Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez from Porto on five-year contracts for a combined 70 million euros (US$89.99 million) as it looks to emulate the success of Ligue 1 champion Paris Saint-Germain.
There is also speculation that Monaco, backed by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev since late 2011, is about to sign Colombia striker Radamel Falcao from Atletico Madrid.
Moutinho and Rodriguez, aged 26 and 21 respectively, were instrumental in helping Porto clinch a third consecutive domestic league title this season.
Meanwhile, Liverpool has agreed a deal to sign Manchester City's Kolo Toure with the defender poised to sign on July 1 when his contract finishes at the 2012 English Premier League champion, the Merseyside club said on Tuesday.
Toure, 32, has played in the Premier League since 2002 and enjoyed a successful spell at Arsenal before joining City in 2009.
The Ivory Coast international had become a bit-part player in his final season at the Etihad Stadium. He will add experience to Liverpool's defensive ranks following the retirement of club stalwart Jamie Carragher last season.
