Mourinho five-match ban called excessive
REAL Madrid coach Jose Mourinho's five-match touchline ban in European competition is over the top, the club's director general Jorge Valdano said on Saturday.
European soccer's governing body UEFA punished the outspoken Portuguese last Friday for his sending off and verbal outburst following Real's Champions League semifinal first leg defeat to its arch-rival Barcelona last week.
"It's excessive," Valdano told Spanish television after Real's 6-2 thrashing of Sevilla at the Sanchez Pizjuan. "Throughout the season there have been many coaches who have made some very hard comments, and the punishments were smaller."
Real has indicated it would appeal but Valdano said the club had only spoken to UEFA through its legal team.
Mourinho, who had belittled Barcelona's achievements and suggested there was a refereeing conspiracy to favor the Catalan club, remained silent again leaving his No. 2 Aitor Karanka to speak to the media after the match.
"I don't know when he's (Mourinho) going to come out (to speak)," Karanka said. "But as I said yesterday, when things become clearer and calm down a bit, and he sees why all this has happened, he'll come out again."
League tally
Cristiano Ronaldo scored four of Real's six goals, taking his league tally for the season to 33, two ahead of Barcelona's Lionel Messi.
Real's victory closed the gap on Barcelona to five points, denying the leader the chance to wrap up its third consecutive league title when it hosts city rival Espanyol.
In yesterday's early game, Villarreal was held to a dull 0-0 draw at Real Mallorca, a result which saw its chances of securing automatic qualification for next season's Champions League fade away.
Juan Carlos Garrido's men, who were knocked out of the Europa League at the semifinal stage by Porto last Thursday, stayed fourth in the standings with 61 points and three games left to play after a rare midday kickoff.
Villarreal slipped five points behind local rival Valencia in third, which beat Real Sociedad 3-0 on Saturday, but it pulled seven points ahead of fifth place.
Athletic Bilbao survived a late comeback from Levante on Saturday to secure a 3-2 home win that kept it in pole position for the first of the three Europa League places, with 54 points in fifth spot.
