Mourinho hints at card conspiracy again
JOSE Mourinho has claimed he prevented his Real Madrid players from getting deliberate yellow cards to avoid suspension from key Champions League matches because of what he suggested is a conspiracy against him.
Mourinho said he turned down a suggestion by one of his assistant coaches that players including Ricardo Carvalho should get a deliberate caution in the first leg of the team's quarterfinal against Tottenham, which it won 4-0. That would have ruled them out of the second leg but left them with a clean disciplinary record for a semifinal against Barcelona.
Carvalho will miss the first leg semifinal through suspension.
Apparently referring to fierce rival and semifinal opponent Barcelona, Mourinho said some of his rivals were given an easier ride by disciplinary bodies.
"You have to find why Mourinho cannot clean yellow cards but other coaches can," said Mourinho, without saying whom was biased against him, or why.
Mourinho was suspended for a group match against Auxerre in December because of what UEFA called "improper conduct" over claims he instructed players to deliberately get red cards so they could serve bans in the meaningless game. Mourinho denied the accusations but footage showed him apparently sending instructions from the bench immediately before Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos received second yellow cards for time-wasting late in a 4-0 win at Ajax.
Mourinho is unhappy that Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has not been investigated over what can be interpreted as similar incidents. Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta was already carrying a yellow card from a previous game when he was booked with Barcelona 3-0 up against Shakhtar Donestsk on April 6.
Barcelona went on to win the first leg of the quarterfinal match 5-1 and Iniesta is available for the semifinal against Madrid after serving a ban for the second leg.
Barcelona's Victor Valdes and Sergio Busquets also picked up apparently deliberate yellow cards for time-wasting in a league match against Villarreal. The resulting suspensions ruled them out of the next game against lowly Almeria but left them free to face Madrid in the league on Saturday.
"Some teams can clear up their yellow cards and others cannot, and we're one of those," Mourinho said. "So we prefer to do it in a systematic way."
