Mourinho moans as Barca gap widens

JOSE Mourinho hit out at Spain's soccer authorities following the 0-0 draw at Deportivo la Coruna on Saturday, saying his Real Madrid players had not been given enough rest after last Tuesday's Champions League match.

The dropped points at Depor's Riazor Stadium enabled Barcelona to stretch its lead at the top of La Liga to seven points with 25 games played after the champion won 3-0 at Real Mallorca in Saturday's earlier kickoff.

Mourinho, whose side drew 1-1 in their Champions League last-16, first leg at Olympique Lyon on Tuesday, told a news conference it would have been easier on Real if it had been allowed to play Depor yesterday.

"I don't know what would have happened if we had played on Sunday but it would have been fairer," the Portuguese said. "We could have given an extra day off to those who were most tired, we could have trained an extra day.

"The calendar is set by people who know what they are doing. They do what they want and they will carry on like that."

Real, which twice struck a post late on, faces a stiff task to catch Barcelona and end its great rival's two-year reign as Spanish champion.

At Mallorca, World Player of the Year Lionel Messi conjured a magical headed goal, his 26th strike this season, to set depleted Barcelona on its way to victory.

Barcelona now has 68 points from 25 matches while Real is on 61. Valencia, which was playing at Athletic Bilbao yesterday, is adrift in third with 48.

Barcelona made light of the absence through injury of playmaker Xavi, center back Carles Puyol and goalkeeper Victor Valdes as forwards David Villa and Pedro scored their 17th and 13th goals of the season, respectively, to add to Messi's effort.

Barcelona is now unbeaten in its last 19 away matches, equaling a La Liga record set by Basque club Real Sociedad in the 1979-80 campaign.

Earlier, Atletico Madrid twice rallied to secure a 2-2 draw against Sevilla and Espanyol beat Real Sociedad 4-1 to end a four-game losing streak. Also, Sporting Gijon and Zaragoza drew 0-0 in a match of relegation-threatened teams.
