Mourinho says he is ready for Real challenge
INTER Milan coach Jose Mourinho wants to coach Real Madrid and says he's ready to start next season.
Mourinho told Spanish daily Marca that his only options for next season were Inter or Madrid, and he would only leave the Serie A champion for the Spanish club.
"All I can say is that a great coach or player who doesn't play at a club like Madrid will finish their career with something missing," Mourinho said. "I want to coach Real Madrid - 100 percent. Whether it will be next year or later I can't say."
Mourinho will lead Inter against Bayern Munich on Saturday in the Champions League final at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid. Inter has already won a league-cup double this season.
"To leave this club after two incredible years of work, it can only be for Madrid," said Mourinho, whose contract with Inter expires after next season. "And if I go it's with a clean conscience."
Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini's future looks uncertain after his debut season saw the club's trophyless drought continue despite spending 250 million euros (then US$364 million) on players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka.
Madrid finished second to Barcelona for the second straight season, was knocked out of the Copa del Rey by a third-tier club and again lost in the first knockout round of the Champions League.
Real director general Jorge Valdano has said the club would sit down and discuss whether the Chilean would complete the second year of his contract in the coming days.
Mourinho also rates the Champions League bigger than the World Cup.
"This game is the most important in the world," Mourinho said. "It is even bigger than the World Cup because the teams in it are at a higher level than national teams, who can't buy the best players. If you hold it to be important, you have to transmit that to the players."
Finale
Inter ousted English champion-elect Chelsea, CSKA Moscow and defending champion Barcelona to reach this year's finale.
Following the second leg at Nou Camp, where Barcelona won 1-0, Inter was accused of playing overly negative football that lacked the flair of 2009 champion Barcelona. Mourinho vigorously defended his side.
"I think that this season I haven't seen a match like the one between Inter and Barcelona at the San Siro," Mourinho said. "I haven't seen a team play the way we did.
"We attacked aggressively against the champion of Europe. We scored three goals against the champion of Europe. We won the tie in Barcelona, but everyone talks about Barcelona winning and says we parked the bus in front of the goal. We didn't park the bus, we parked the airplane and we did it for two reasons. One, because we only had 10 men and two, because we beat them 3-1 at San Siro, not by parking the bus, or the boat or the airplane, but by smashing them at the San Siro."
