Napoli denies Benitez talks
NAPOLI President Aurelio De Laurentiis denies meeting former Chelsea coach Rafael Benitez on Monday but admits he is interested in selling Edinson Cavani to sign Manchester City's Edin Dzeko.
Napoli is in the hunt for a new manager after Walter Mazzarri announced his departure.
De Laurentiis said yesterday, "I didn't go to London to meet with Benitez ... it's true though that I've spoken with a lot of coaches in the last six months."
Former Liverpool manager Benitez has already coached in Italy, taking over from Jose Mourinho after the Portuguese led Inter Milan to a treble of league, Cup and Champions League.
After signing a two-year deal, the Spaniard steered the Nerazzurri to victory in the Italian Super Cup and Club World Cup but a run of poor results in the league left his position fragile and after seeing his request for new players turned down he was eventually sacked in December.
Benitez took over on an interim basis at Chelsea last November following the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo and led the defending Champions League winner to victory in the Europa League final over Benfica.
Cavani finished as top goal-scorer in Serie A with 29, and City is one of the few clubs which could afford the fee Napoli will demand for the Uruguayan. De Laurentiis said: "I told (sporting director Riccardo) Bigon 'go to City to negotiate for Dzeko and ask what they are ready to do for Cavani'."
The Napoli president has already indicated that he would be willing to release the Uruguayan striker for a fee of 60 million euros (US$77 million).
Cavani has scored 104 goals in three seasons for Napoli since signing from Palermo.
