Nedved replaces Beckham as CSL ambassador
FORMER Czech midfielder Pavel Nedved said on Wednesday that he has been named ambassador of the cash-filled Chinese Super League, replacing David Beckham.
“I have become ambassador of the Chinese league today,” said the 43-year-old winner of the 2003 Ballon d’Or. “Before me it was David Beckham so it’s a great honor for me and for the entire Czech Republic,” Nedved told reporters on the fringes of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Prague. The CSL dubbed Nedved, also vice president of one of his former clubs Juventus, “Czech Ironman” and said he had all the characteristics required to be a good ambassador for the league. “Nedved is known for his outstanding soccer skills and more importantly his never-say-die spirit. His fighting spirit fits well in what the Chinese Super League calls for,” it said in a statement. Former Sparta Prague and Lazio star Nedved played 91 games for the Czech national team, helping it to the Euro 1996 final, where it lost to Germany.
