Neville still without win in La Liga

GARY Neville’s disappointing start as Valencia coach continued when the ambitious Singapore-owned club drew 2-2 at home to lowly Rayo Vallecano in La Liga yesterday, prompting more rumblings of discontent from the fans.

Neville, who took over when Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked last month, has overseen six games without a win in Spain’s top division, with four draws and two defeats leaving the team mired down in 10th place.

Unless it can rapidly string a run of victories together, Valencia risks missing out on a lucrative berth in continental competition for next season, the least it would have expected before the start of the campaign.

Yesterday’s stalemate means Valencia, which last won La Liga in 2004, has drawn five league matches in a row at home for only the second time and the first since 1969.

Rayo dominated the first half and went ahead through Jozabed Sanchez after 15 minutes.

With nerves fraying at Mestalla Stadium, Alvaro Negredo leveled against the flow of play with an audacious strike from near the halfway line in the 55th.

Rayo’s Diego Llorente volleyed in a corner kick to seemingly end Valencia’s rally in the 69th, only for Paco Alcacer to win a ball and score with two minutes left.

Valencia has 24 points from 20 matches, eight points off the European qualification places. Rayo is third from bottom on 16 points.

Atletico Madrid, which was at Las Palmas later, is two points clear of champion Barcelona at the top on 44 points at the halfway stage of the campaign.
