New Zealand eye luxury World Cup hideaway resort

NEW Zealand may not win next year's World Cup but they are determined to spend the tournament in style at a luxury resort near Johannesburg.

New Zealand Football (NZF) are set to splash out on a six-star complex with nine houses sleeping up to six -- each with its own private swimming pool, local media reported.

The "All Whites" plan to remain at the gated resort and fly to their Group F matches against Slovakia, Paraguay and World Cup holders Italy, according to Saturday's New Zealand Herald.

NZF have yet to finalise details but senior officials, including chairman Frank van Hattum, have flown out to South Africa to check the venue's suitability.

Johannesburg airport is close and flights to Rustenburg, Nelspruit and Polokwane -- where New Zealand take on Slovakia, Italy and Paraguay respectively -- take less than an hour.

The paper quoted van Hattum as saying the contract would be signed "in a few days".

New Zealand's only previous World Cup finals appearance was in Spain in 1982 when they stayed at the "Don Carlos Hotel" near Marbella and travelled to games by bus.
