Niersbach gets 1-year ban
FIFA’S ethics judge has banned ruling-council member Wolfgang Niersbach for one year in an investigation into Germany’s 2006 World Cup bid.
The investigation found that Niersbach failed to report findings about possible unethical conduct and conflicts of interest during the bidding process. FIFA said investigators have not yet looked into possible breaches of the ethics code “in relation to possible acts of bribery and/or corruption” but only Niersbach’s awareness of incidents and failure to report them in a “timely manner”. Although Niersbach resigned as president of the German soccer federation last year, he retained his elected positions on the top decision-making bodies at FIFA and UEFA.
