Nine is divine for Changchun
TWO Chinese Super League teams scored impressive victories in the Asian Champions League yesterday.
Changchun Yatai made the most of its home field advantage to thrash Indonesia's Persipura Jayapura 9-0 in Jilin Province while Beijing Guo'an defeated Kawasaki Frontale 3-1 in Japan.
Changchun's match was played with the temperature at minus six degrees Celsius.
Costa Rican Johnny Woodly Lambert and Gao Jian both scored hat-tricks, while substitute Liu Weidong nabbed two goals and Wang Bo rounded out the scoring at Jingkai Stadium in northern China.
The route started in the 24th minute when Lambert delivered a cross into the path of Gao, who beat Persipura goalkeeper Jendry Pitoy with a curling shot.
The hosts added two more in the first half to hold a comfortable lead. Changchun then exploded for six more goals in the second half as Persipura struggled in the frigid conditions.
Changchun now has a 1-1 record as its Group F campaign began with a 1-0 away loss to the Kashima Antlers
In Kawasaki, Guo'an substitute Wang Changqing scored twice in the second half to lead Beijing to victory on a pitch covered in snow.
The conditions seemed to favor Beijing as the visitors asserted themselves early.
Joel Griffiths scored in the 36th minute to give Beijing a 1-0 lead when he fought off Kawasaki defender Hiroki Ito and beat goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima.
But Kosuke Kikuchi leveled just four minutes later off a corner.
Wang, who went on at the start of the second half, gave Beijing a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute and put the game out of reach with his second four minutes from time.
Guo'an, looking to qualify for the knockout stage for the first time, improved to 2-0 in Group E after defeating the Melbourne Victory in their opening game.
Kawasaki lost its first match 2-0 away to Seongnam Ilhwa.
Also yesterday, Seongnam defeated Melbourne 2-0.
