No derby joy as Shenhua held

NICOLAS Anelka's first Shanghai derby ended goalless last night as the French striker came agonizingly close to scoring in the second half, hitting the post, against Shanghai Shenxin.
Shenxin left back Li Lei was sent off in the 72nd minute after receiving a second yellow card for a bad foul but Shenhua could not turn the advantage into a much-needed victory.
Shenhua's Australian striker Joel Griffiths injured his right knee and was replaced by Cao Yunding in the 33rd minute. It was unclear whether the injury was serious.
"It was an exciting game but it's a pity that neither of the team scored," said Guo Guangqi, Shenhua team manager. "We had some chances and played better in the second half than the first."
Guo also said that the team is struggling with injuries with three of its imports, Griffiths, Mario Bozic and Moises, sidelined.
Shenxin controlled the midfield in the first half and created several chances but Shenhua goalkeeper Wang Dalei was in inspired form, making tough saves to keep his team in the game. Wang was selected player of the match.
The best chance for Shenhua came in the 71st minute when player-coach Anelka got the ball in Shenxin's box following a Joni header. But his ground shot was blocked by the far post, much to the disappointment of the home fans.
Although both teams are based in Shanghai, most fans at Hongkou Stadium last night were cheering for Shenhua.
"When I came to know that the team would move to Shanghai, the first thing I told my players was to work harder," said Shenxin's Shanghai-native coach Zhu Jiong. "We've been keeping up our hard efforts since then and the team has shown good spirit."
In other games yesterday, Zhejiang Greentown grabbed a 2-1 home win against Liaoning Whowin; and Jiangsu Sainty lost 1-2 to Changchun Yatai, marking its first home loss of the season. On Friday, defending champion Guangzhou Evergrande was beaten 1-3 by Dalian Shide away; Tianjin Teda defeated Shandong Luneng 2-0 at home; and Beijing Guo'an had a 2-1 comeback win over Guizhou Renhe at home.
The rest of the games are scheduled for today.
