O’Neill backs Keane over claims

REPUBLIC of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has backed assistant coach Roy Keane after the former Manchester United captain was involved in an incident with a member of the public at the national team’s hotel.

Details of the incident have not been disclosed, although the Football Association of Ireland said late on Wednesday that Keane called the Irish police to tell them what happened.

O’Neill said yesterday: “Roy asked that the Gardai (Irish police) be called and he has notified them of what happened. While this process is ongoing, we are unable to say more at this point. However, I can say that having been made aware of the facts, Roy has both my full support and the full support of the FAI and (chief executive) John Delaney.”

Police and an ambulance were called to the team hotel in Portmarnock, north of Dublin, after the incident, but no arrest or complaint was made.

Ireland plays Scotland in a European Championship qualifier today.
