Owen, Giggs fire United in Hangzhou

NEW signing Michael Owen scored twice and Ryan Giggs grabbed a hat-trick as Manchester United rounded off its preseason Asian tour with a 8-2 thrashing of China's Hangzhou Greentown yesterday.

Dimitar Berbatov, Zoran Tosic and Nani were also on target for the English champion against the mid-table Chinese Super League side on a humid night in the Zhejiang Province capital of Hangzhou.

England striker Owen, who joined United as a free agent earlier this month, took his tally to four goals in his first four games before being replaced by Wayne Rooney at halftime.

United, which beat FC Seoul in South Korea only 48 hours before taking the pitch, also won its two other games on this Far East trip, beating Malaysia twice.

In Singapore, Liverpool beat Singapore 5-0 yesterday to snap a three-game preseason winless streak.

Andriy Voronin opened the scoring in first-half injury time after a slow start by the Reds. Liverpool secured the result with second-half goals by Fernando Torres, Albert Riera and a brace from Krisztian Nemeth.

Midfielder Xabi Alonso, a Real Madrid transfer target, played the final 13 minutes of the match in his first appearance this preseason.

Liverpool was winless in friendlies this year. A 1-1 draw against Thailand last Wednesday followed a 0-1 loss to Rapid Vienna and a scoreless draw against Swiss club St Gallen.
