PSG claims Champions Trophy with Beijing win
FRENCH Ligue 1 champion Paris Saint-Germain added the Champions Trophy to its growing list of accolades with a 2-0 win over Cup winner Guingamp in Beijing last night.
Star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored both goals inside the opening 20 minutes as the champion effectively ended the match as a contest inside the first period at the Workers Stadium.
It was the capital-based outfit’s second successive victory in the competition, between the French champion and Cup winner, having defeated Girondins Bordeaux in Gabon in 2013.
It also won the first ever edition in 1995, beating Nantes on penalties.
Ibrahimovic opened the scoring after just nine minutes when taking goalkeeper Mamadou Samassa by surprise with a shot from 20 yards.
On 20 minutes he doubled the advantage from the penalty spot after Jean-Christophe Bahebeck was brought down by Lars Jacobsen.
The big Swede was enjoying a purple patch and in the last minute tried his luck from inside his own half, although without success.
Guingamp’s best opportunity came in the 31st minute when Brazilian center-back Marquinhos was harshly adjudged to have brought down Claudio Beauvue, but Italian goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu, who was a virtual spectator throughout, saved Mustapha Yatabare’s spot-kick.
PSG begins its quest for a third straight Ligue 1 title on Friday at Reims while Guingamp hosts Saint-Etienne next Saturday in its opening Ligue 1 fixture of the season.
In transfer news, Tottenham Hotspur has completed the signing of English defender Eric Dier from Portuguese side Sporting on a five-year deal, the English Premier League club announced yesterday.
No fee was disclosed but media reports say Spurs paid around 4 million pounds (US$6.73 million) for the England under-21 International.
“It has always been my ambition and my dream to come back to England and play in the Premier League,” the 20-year-old told the club website.
Dier’s family moved to Portugal when he was a child.
He made 30 appearances for the Lisbon club, and spent time on loan at Everton in 2011.
He is Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino’s third signing following the arrival of Wales defender Ben Davies and Netherlands goalkeeper Michel Vorm, both from Swansea City.
Spurs open their league campaign at West Ham United on August 16.
