PSV, Sporting advance in Europa with late goals
PSV Eindhoven scored in the last minute to beat Sparta Prague 1-0 and become the latest former European champion to advance from the group stage of the Europa League on Thursday.
Sparta defender Tomas Repka deflected Orlando Engelaar's header into his own net to hand PSV a place in the next round with a game to spare, a day after fellow former European champions Hamburg, Ajax and Benfica all went through.
Athletic Bilbao beat Austria Vienna 3-0 to qualify in second place in Group L although its opponent could be in trouble with UEFA after its fans caused play to be held up for 20 minutes by launching fireworks onto the field to protest two contentious goals.
Sporting Lisbon's Leandro Grimi scored in the last minute to give his side a 1-1 draw with Heerenveen and the point it needed to advance as Group D winner, while AS Roma advanced after Francesco Totti and Mirko Vucinic scored for a 2-1 win over FC Basel. Werder Bremen secured top spot in Group L with an easy 4-1 win over Nacional that eliminated the Portuguese team.
Also on Thursday, already-qualified Shakhtar Donetsk lost its perfect record but secured top spot in Group J with a 0-0 draw against FC Brugge, which may now not advance because Toulouse beat Partizan Belgrade 1-0 to move to within a point of the Belgian side.
PSV created few chances and Danko Lazovic came closest to scoring with a 33rd-minute header that narrowly missed the target. Captain Ibrahim Afellay also had a low shot saved in the 85th.
The Austria Vienna-Bilbao match was interrupted in the 67th. Fans yelled "Schiebung" (swindle) because Bilbao's first goal benefited from an offside decision and the second goal came from a free-kick which they thought was wrongly awarded by Norwegian referee Svein Oddvar Moen.
Zoltan Gera gave Fulham, in its first season of European competition, a 1-0 win over CSKA Sofia that took it to eight points.
