Palace loss deepens QPR relegation fears

QUEENS Park Rangers’ relegation fears worsened and their dismal away record continued with a 1-3 English Premier League defeat by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in London yesterday.

Defeat for QPR, which has lost 13 of 14 away games this season, left it 19th with 22 points from 29 matches. Palace is 12th on 33 points.

Wilfried Zaha put Palace ahead before the hosts scored two goals in two minutes as James McArthur doubled the advantage and Joel Ward added a third late in the first half.

Matt Phillips pulled a late goal back with a thunderous strike but it failed to spark a QPR revival and Chris Ramsey’s side now faces an uphill battle to avoid relegation.

Second-placed Manchester City was traveling to Burnley later needing a win to close the five-point gap on leader Chelsea, which plays Southampton today.

Arsenal was hosting West Ham United hoping to cement third spot.

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is confident Raheem Sterling will sign a contract extension at Anfield despite talks being put on hold until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old England international, whose deal expires in 2017, has developed into one of Liverpool’s most influential players and has scored 10 goals in all competitions this season.

“I am relaxed about the Raheem situation. He has a couple of years to go,” Rodgers said yesterday.

“It is quite obvious that Liverpool is the best option for him. He has just turned 20 in December and he has already made 114 appearances.

“He has a great opportunity and for any young player there is a great opportunity here. We have a track record of developing talents and there will be more of those players like Raheem who will get that opportunity.”

Fifth-placed Liverpool is unbeaten in the league since mid-December and its rapid rise up the table means it is now two points behind Manchester United which occupies fourth spot.

Liverpool travels to Rodgers’s former club Swansea City tomorrow and the Northern Irishman is expecting a close fight in the race for Champions League qualification. “I think it is going to be very tight,” he said. “We have joined the race in the last few months and we are really looking forward to these games.”
