Pep talk may come back to haunt City

Manchester City may regret its decision to announce Pep Guardiola’s appointment as manager four months before Manuel Pellegrini relinquishes charge of the club.

City is still in contention to win four trophies but its form in the two weeks since it confirmed Guardiola’s arrival in July has raised questions about its ability to mark Pellegrini’s departure with silverware.

Successive home defeats by leader Leicester City and second placed Tottenham Hotspur have left City six points off the pace with serious doubts about whether its expensively-assembled squad is still playing for the manager.

Pellegrini, who guided City to the Premier League title and League Cup victory in 2014, was honest enough after the 1-2 loss to Spurs on Sunday to admit his team had been beaten by the better side. He defiantly suggested, however, that it could still win the title. “We will see at the end of the season which is the best team,” he said, “but the first problem is our team.

“We need to improve on a lot of things. We have 36 points more to play for. I think all the teams will lose more points from now until the end of the season but when you don’t depend just on what you do of course it’s more difficult.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United great Bobby Charlton is to have a stand at Old Trafford named after him in honor of his contribution to the club.

The South Stand — the side of the stadium where the dugouts and changing rooms are located — will be renamed the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand at an unveiling ceremony before the home match against Everton in the Premier League on April 2. It will mark 60 years after Charlton made his debut for United.

“This is a great honor and I am very proud — for myself and my family,” said the 78-year-old Charlton, who played 758 games for United and scored a club-record 249 goals. “Manchester United has been such an important part of my life and I have so many wonderful memories of this Theatre of Dreams.”
