Rashford fires United, Spurs soar

TEENAGER Marcus Rashford followed up two goals on his Manchester United debut in midweek with another double plus an assist as Louis van Gaal’s team beat Arsenal 3-2 in the English Premier League at Old Trafford yesterday.

The 18-year-old local man struck twice in three minutes in the first half to undermine third-placed Arsenal’s title challenge.

Former United striker Danny Welbeck pulled one goal back but Rashford set up Ander Herrera for United’s third before Mesut Ozil reduced the deficit.

Rashford, came into the team following an injury to Anthony Martial ahead of United’s Europa League game with FC Midtjylland on Thursday and scored twice as van Gaal’s side won 5-1.

Van Gaal, meanwhile, made a late bid for Oscar recognition with a comical touchline tumble during the clash.

Protesting against what he felt was a dive by an Arsenal player, the Dutchman marched up to fourth official Mike Dean on the Old Trafford touchline and to illustrate his point he fell flat on his back.

His actions drew roars from the home fans and footage of the incident quickly went viral on social media.

Van Gaal, 64, has been under serious pressure for several months at United, but his side went into the game chasing a third successive win in all competitions.

The result left Arsenal five points behind leader Leicester City while United returned to fifth place above West Ham United.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to achieve a crucial 2-1 home win over lowly Swansea City yesterday.

Italian striker Alberto Paloschi, signed from Chievo in the January transfer window, scored his first goal for the Welsh club to give the visitors a half-time lead.

Substitute Nacer Chadli equalized with 20 minutes left and full-back Danny Rose scored the winner seven minutes later.

Seeking a first league title since 1961, second-placed Spurs are now two points behind Leicester with 11 games to play.

On Saturday, Leicester and reigning champion Chelsea needed winning goals in the 89th minute to keep on track their respective campaigns for the English title and European football next season.

Leonardo Ulloa came off the bench in the 78th to score the only goal of Leicester’s home game against a Norwich side that looked to have earned a vital point in its battle against relegation.

Branislav Ivanovic headed Chelsea’s winner in a 2-1 comeback victory at Southampton, which had previously kept six consecutive clean sheets in the league.

Elsewhere, West Ham scored a 1-0 win over Sunderland in the early kickoff, while Watford was held to 0-0 at home by Bournemouth, and Stoke City beat bottom club Aston Villa 2-1. West Bromwich Albion edged Crystal Palace 3-2 in the late game.
