Rayo stays in hunt for Europa
Rayo Vallecano won 3-2 yesterday at Levante led by Francisco "Piti" Medina's double to stay in the hunt for a Europa League berth next season.
Piti opened the scoring 20 minutes in by firing in a rebound before Robert Acquafresca leveled for Levante in the 52nd.
Franco Vazquez finished off a Rayo counterattack four minutes later and Piti scored his 17th goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 72nd to make it 3-1.
Levante midfielder Vicente Iborra pulled one back in the 86th to add drama to the final minutes, but Rayo held on for victory.
Rayo's first win in six rounds lifted it into eighth place in the Spanish league, which currently earns a spot in the Europa League with Malaga banned from UEFA competition next season.
On Saturday, Real Sociedad came back to win 2-1 at Sevilla and Valencia beat Getafe 1-0 as both teams remained locked on points in their fight for a fourth-place finish in the Spanish league.
Sociedad remained ahead of fifth-place Valencia on head-to-head goal difference and in control of Spain's last Champions League spot with two rounds to go. Elsewhere, Granada ensured its third straight season in the first division by rolling over 10-man Osasuna 3-0.
Also, Elche will play in Spain's first division next season after securing promotion on Saturday.
In Italy, Sampdoria became the only team to beat Juventus twice in the league under Antonio Conte as it secured a 3-2 victory over the newly crowned Serie A champion on Saturday.
Eder, Lorenzo De Silvestri and Mauro Icardi helped Sampdoria come from behind after Fabio Quagliarella had scored against his old team.
Emanuele Giaccherini reduced the deficit in stoppage time.
Juventus striker Nicklas Bendtner fractured his wrist in the game and will have an operation on Sunday.
In Germany, Borussia Dortmund must wait on Mats Hummels' ankle injury for next Saturday's Champions League final, while Wembley opponent Bayern Munich finished the Bundesliga season with a seven-goal thriller. Centre-back Hummels is an injury doubt for the London final after damaging ankle ligaments in Dortmund's shock 1-2 defeat at home to Hoffenheim on Saturday.
