Real in cruise control, Inter wins to top its group
JOSE Mourinho has often said his teams do better in his second season in charge and Real Madrid's thrashing of Olympique Lyon in the Champions League provided further evidence to back his claim.
Real was utterly dominant against an unambitious Lyon team at the Bernabeu on Tuesday, running out 4-0 winner with goals from Karim Benzema, Sami Khedira, Mesut Ozil and Sergio Ramos.
Three wins from three games without conceding a goal left the Spaniards top of Group D, five points ahead of Ajax Amsterdam and Lyon, in their quest to improve on last season's semifinal appearance. Ajax beat Croatia's Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 in the other group match.
Real is pursuing a record 10th European Cup, and Mourinho his third all with different clubs, and it seems to be coming together even without Cristiano Ronaldo getting on the scoresheet.
The world's most expensive player notched an incredible 53 goals in all competitions last year but this season he has been a more creative influence and he provided yet another assist to set up the opening goal for Benzema.
"Ronaldo seems fine to me. I'm delighted with him," former Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan coach Mourinho told reporters.
Elsewhere, Inter moved top of Group B, with a 1-0 win at Lille, Giampaolo Pazzini scoring the game's only goal in the 22nd minute. Also, CSKA Moscow beat Trabzonspor 3-0.
With Napoli and Bayern Munich drawing 1-1 at the San Paulo Stadium, the German side stayed top of Group A with seven points, followed by the Italians (5).
Manchester City, which beat Villarreal (0) on a late Sergio Aguero goal, has four points.
In Group C, Manchester United beat Otelul Galati 2-0 in Bucharest, with Wayne Rooney scoring two penalties while Portugal's Benfica beat Basel in Switzerland by the same score.
United's first victory in the group lifts it to second place, two points behind Benfica after three games.
A crisp strike from Pazzini earned Inter an uninspiring 1-0 win over Lille. It was only the third win of the season for the Italian giant, which won the competition in 2010.
Claudio Ranieri's team is top though, after Ivory Coast striker Seydou Doumbia scored twice to help CSKA on its way to victory over Turkey's Trabzonspor. The goals came either side of a volley from substitute Aleksandrs Cauna.
