Red Devils go 10 points clear
MANCHESTER United enjoyed a stroll in the spring sunshine yesterday as it eased to a 2-0 home win over Fulham to open a mammoth 10-point lead at the top of the English Premier League.
United, which hosts Chelsea in the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday, rested several first-choice players at Old Trafford and had just the sort of undemanding afternoon it wanted as first-half goals by Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia made it 15 wins from 16 home league games this season.
United has 69 points with Arsenal, which is at Blackpool today, second on 59 with two games in hand.
Chelsea moved up to third on 58 points after a Florent Malouda goal in the 67th minute was enough to beat bottom club Wigan Athletic 1-0 at Stamford Bridge 11 months after the Londoners thrashed the same side 8-0 to wrap up the title.
Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United, both on 32 points, are a point ahead of Wigan and both lost 0-3. Wolves crashed at home to Everton and West Ham was beaten at Bolton Wanderers.
Manchester City, which visits Liverpool tomorrow, has 56 points, three clear of Tottenham Hotspur following its 3-2 home win over Stoke City where Peter Crouch scored twice.
In the other game, West Bromwich Albion rallied to beat host Sunderland 3-2.
In Germany, Jakub Blaszczykowski volleyed in a stoppage-time equalizer to give Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund a last-gasp 1-1 draw at Hamburg yesterday and increase its lead to eight points with five games left.
Ruud van Nistelrooy converted a penalty in the 39th minute after Mladen Petric was felled by Mats Hummels and Dortmund looked to be heading for its fourth defeat after missing three golden chances and twice hitting the woodwork.
But Blaszczykowski fired in with seconds left in stoppage time after a good cross from Marcel Schmelzer and a header from Patrick Owomoyela, to keep Dortmund on track for its first title since 2002.
Champion Bayern Munich suffered a setback in the battle for third place that leads to the Champions League qualifiers after drawing 1-1 at Nuremberg while Hanover reclaimed third spot following its 2-0 win over Mainz 05.
Hanover has 53 points, with Bayern, which had Arjen Robben sent off at the end with a straight red card for dissent, a point behind in fourth place.
"This is a setback for us because we dropped two points here," said Bayern scorer Thomas Mueller. "It was a weak performance from us and we paid the price."
Schalke 04 piled more misery on its former coach Felix Magath beating his new team VfL Wolfsburg 1-0 thanks to a Jose Jurado goal to leave the 2009 champion in the relegation playoff spot on 28.
Schalke, which hosts holder Inter Milan in the Champions League quarterfinals second leg next week after winning 5-2 in Italy, improved to ninth place on 39 points.
Freiburg's Julian Schuster scored the winner as it beat Hoffenheim 3-2. Second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, on 58, takes on St Pauli today.
