Reds sign Caulker on loan deal
LIVERPOOL has completed the loan signing of defender Steven Caulker from Championship side Queens Park Rangers, the English Premier League club said on its website.
The 24-year-old’s arrival will ease the injury problems Liverpool is facing, with central defenders Mamadou Sakho, Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel all on the sidelines.
Caulker, who spent the first half of this season on loan at Southampton, started his career at Tottenham Hotspur before moving to Cardiff City.
He won his solitary England cap in 2012 and will be eligible to play for Liverpool against leader Arsenal in the Premier League today.
Tottenham, meanwhile, extended the contract of 19-year-old Dele Alli to 2021 after the midfielder produced a string of assured performances that propelled the club to fourth in the standings, it said yesterday.
Alli has made an instant impact at the club after joining from second tier side Milton Keynes Dons last year.
“We’re delighted to announce that @Dele_Alli has signed a new contract with the Club which will run until 2021,” Spurs said on their Twitter feed.
Also, Newcastle United has reached an agreement for the transfer of Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey for a fee of 12 million pounds (US$17.4 million), the BBC reported.
The 23-year-old was to undergo a medical yesterday.
Shelvey joined Swansea from Liverpool in 2013 for a reported 5 million pounds. He has made 79 Premier League appearances and scored 10 goals for the Welsh club, which is fourth-bottom in the table, two points clear of the relegation zone.
