Reds through after epic shootout

LIVERPOOL reached the fourth round of the League Cup on Tuesday after winning an epic and nerve-shredding penalty shootout 14-13 at home to second-tier Middlesbrough, with the teams ending extra time tied at 2-2.

Middlesbrough’s Albert Adomah brought the gripping penalty contest to an end when he fired wide after both teams had kept their nerve in sudden death, shattering the record for the longest shootout in the League Cup.

Liverpool twice took the lead against its lower league opponents, but defensive errors were once again its undoing.

Elsewhere, Nathaniel Clyne scored with a stunning 30-meter strike as Southampton won 2-1 at Arsenal and Swansea City beat Everton 3-0 with goals from Nathan Dyer, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Marvin Emnes.

In another all Premier League tie, Stoke City came back from a goal down to win 2-1 at Sunderland thanks to a double from Spaniard Marc Muniesa. Elsewhere, third tier MK Dons won 2-0 at home to Bradford City, fourth tier Shrewsbury Town won 1-0 at home to Norwich City, and Fulham beat Doncaster Rovers 2-1.

In Italy, Spaniard Fernando Torres scored his maiden goal for AC Milan on his full Serie A debut to help spark the fightback in a 2-2 draw away to Empoli.

Empoli had won only two of its 18 previous league meetings with Milan and never beaten the Rossoneri at its Carlo Castellani stadium.

In Spain, Cristiano Ronaldo scored four times as Real Madrid came from behind to move within three points of La Liga leader Barcelona with a 5-1 win over Elche.

The Portuguese also scored a hat-trick in Real’s 8-2 thrashing of Deportivo la Coruna on Saturday and now has 12 goals to his name in just eight appearances this season.

In Germany, Mario Goetze scored two goals as Bayern Munich eased to a 4-0 victory over promoted side Paderborn and moved to the top of the Bundesliga.

Paderborn’s hopes of achieving a huge upset were dashed quickly, as Goetze and Robert Lewandowski scored inside the first quarter of an hour. Goetze and Thomas Mueller then netted late in the match as Bayern brought down to earth the team that had come into the match as the surprise league leader.

In other matches, Schalke won 3-0 at Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim and Freiburg drew 3-3.
