Relaxed Mourinho waits on Sanchez deal
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho remains relaxed about his chances of signing Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez despite late interest from Chelsea.
The United manager was speaking on Monday about the pursuit of the Chilean, who looks likely to leave the Emirates in the January transfer window ahead of his contract expiring at the end of the current campaign.
That will enable Arsenal to recoup some cash for the highly-rated Sanchez, with United understood to have put together a package that will be worth 拢35 million (US$48 million) to Arsene Wenger鈥檚 club, and include United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, valued at 拢10 million, as part of the deal.
Sanchez had long been expected to join Manchester City, who failed in a bid to secure his services on the final day of the European summer transfer window. Mkhitaryan鈥檚 agent Mino Raiola told Britain鈥檚 Times newspaper yesterday that Sanchez鈥檚 transfer to United was reliant on his client joining Arsenal as part of the deal.
鈥淢anchester United are not going to sign Sanchez unless Mkhi agrees to join Arsenal,鈥 Raiola told the newspaper. 鈥淢khi is going to do what is best for him. He has two-and-a-half years left on his contract so it鈥檚 his decision. Sanchez is part of the Mkhi deal, not the other way around.鈥
There were reports that Chelsea has made a late attempt to hijack the signing and Mourinho, speaking after his team defeated relegation-threatened Stoke 3-0 at Old Trafford, admitted Sanchez had attracted attention from other clubs.
鈥淚 am not confident but, what鈥檚 the opposite? Not unconfident.
鈥淛ust relaxed with the feeling he is an Arsenal player, that he can stay there but also with the feeling that he can move. If he moves, I think we have a chance.
鈥淢ost probably, a player like him, he probably has other big clubs who are interested. And who knows? 鈥淚 think him, Mr Wenger, Mr (Ivan) Gazidis (the Arsenal chief executive), they are the ones who really know what鈥檚 going to happen.鈥
Meanwhile, Arsenal forward Theo Walcott is edging closer to a 拢20 million move to Everton after he travelled to Merseyside for a medical as Toffees coach Sam Allardyce bids to boost his attacking options. Britain鈥檚 Press Association reported that the 28-year-old was due to attend the club鈥檚 Finch Farm training ground to undergo his physical examination and finalize terms.
