Relegation-threatened Cagliari fires Zola
CAGLIARI has fired Gianfranco Zola as coach after less than three months in charge, with the Italian Serie A club battling against relegation.
“Cagliari announce that Gianfranco Zola and his staff have been relieved of the technical leadership of the first team,” the Sardinian club said in a statement. “It was a decision which was taken reluctantly against a great man who has written unforgettable pages in the history of Cagliari, bringing brilliance and giving international prestige to the land of Sardinia.”
The 48-year-old Zola, a former Napoli, Chelsea and Italy forward who finished his playing career at Cagliari in 2005, replaced Poland’s Zdenek Zeman at the end of December but managed to steer the club to only two wins in 11 matches.
Saturday’s 0-2 loss at Sampdoria was Cagliari’s third straight and left it in 18th place, four points from safety. Speculation suggests Cagliari could now re-hire Zeman for the rest of the season It is the sixth coaching change in Serie A this season.
