Resurgent Foxes pull clear of drop zone

RESURGENT Leicester City pulled four points clear of the English Premier League relegation zone thanks to Leonardo Ulloa’s brace in a 3-0 victory against free-falling Newcastle United at the King Power Stadium yesterday.

Ulloa headed home inside the first minute and, after Wes Morgan doubled the lead in the 17th minute, fired home emphatically from the penalty spot after Emmanuel Riviere tangled with Marcin Wasilewski in the 48th.

Newcastle’s afternoon was compounded when Mike Williamson was sent off just after the hour for a second bookable offense before Daryl Janmaat was dismissed in added time.

Victory lifts Leicester, winner of five of its last six matches, to 16th, one point and two places behind Newcastle which has lost eight successive matches.

Later yesterday bottom side Burnley was traveling to West Ham United, 19th-placed Queens Park Rangers was visiting Liverpool and Sunderland, in 18th, was hosting Southampton.

“It was a big performance,” Morgan told BT Sport. “We came out of the blocks firing and the early goal put us in the driving seat. But our work isn’t done yet. There’s still games remaining. We’ve got points but we probably need another win to be certain.”

Only champion-elect Chelsea has beaten Leicester since March.

Earlier, Bournemouth was promoted to the Premier League for the first time as second-tier champion after Watford threw away the title in the final seconds of the season yesterday.

Already guaranteed promotion, Watford led the League Championship heading into yesterday’s finale and was beating Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 until stoppage time when it conceded to draw 1-1.

That meant Bournemouth clinched the trophy by a single point by beating Charlton Athletic 3-0, only five years after the south-coast team was playing in the fourth tier.

There is another spot in the Premier League available to the playoff final winner. In the two-legged playoff semifinals, Norwich City will play Ipswich Town in an east-coast derby and Middlesbrough will face Brentford.
