Returning Hulk hits brace in SIPG draw

SHANGHAI SIPG drew 2-2 with Beijing Guo’an in a Chinese Super League clash at Shanghai Stadium last night, thanks to a brace from Brazil striker Hulk, who returned from a two-month injury layoff.

SIPG manager Sven-Goran Eriksson started with Hulk, who partnered compatriot Elkeson, Wu Lei and Evrard in attack. SIPG was missing playmaker Dario Conca, out for the rest of the season due to injury.

The hosts began aggressively but it was the visitors who found their touch first with Uzbekistan midfielder Igor Sergeev and Yu Dabao testing SIPG’s defense with close-range shots.

Despite being closely marked, Hulk’s bullet-like shot from out of the box five minutes into the second half left Beijing goalie Yang Zhi stranded.

Beijing equalized in the 66th from the spot after Burak Yilmaz was brought down by SIPG goalie Yan Junling. The Turkey striker himself took the penalty.

Fifteen minutes later, the SIPG defense allowed an unmarked Lei Tenglong to head in the visitors’ second goal from a pass.

There was drama in the closing minutes as SIPG was given a penalty in the 88th following a handball foul in the Beijing box. Hulk took the chance to score his third goal in just two CSL appearances. “I am just really happy to be back,” he said after the match. “Let’s prepare for the match on Tuesday.”

SIPG head to South Korea next week to take on K-League champion Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in their AFC Champions League quarterfinal second leg.

The draw means SIPG remains fourth in the CSL standings on 39 points, one less than city rival Greenland Shenhua. Shenhua faces Eriksson’s former team Guangzhou R&F in the southern China city tomorrow.

Guangzhou Evergrande, with a six-point lead, takes on Hebei China Fortune in Qinhuangdao today. Hebei has hired former Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini as its coach but as the Chilean only arrived on Thursday, Hebei’s Chinese coaching team will take his place today.
