Riera axed for 鈥榳orst club鈥 tweet
SPANISH midfield player Albert Riera was sacked by Udinese, without ever playing a match in Italy, over an abusive tweet, Gazzetta dello Sport reported yesterday.
The Friuli club issued a terse statement earlier this week announcing “the mutual cancellation of the payer’s contract”.
The Serie A team’s move came after the 32-year-old former Liverpool player tweeted that Udinese was “the worst club” he had played for.
Former Spain international Riera, who has also turned out for Girondins Bordeaux in France and Turkish club Galatasaray, joined Udinese in March and was immediately loaned to English Championship club Watford, in which Udinese owner Umberto Pozzo has an interest.
Udinese, coached by Andrea Stramaccioni, currently sits eighth in the Serie A table on 18 points, 13 points behind frontrunner Juventus.
