Robben awaits scan, Mikel out
DUTCH winger Arjen Robben will today undergo a scan on his hamstring which will determine his World Cup hopes after picking up the injury in a 6-1 friendly thrashing of Hungary in Amsterdam yesterday, coach Bert van Marwijk said.
He will not travel to South Africa with the rest of the party but has not been ruled out for the World Cup finals which start on Friday.
"He made an unnatural move and then sustained the hamstring injury," van Marwijk told news conference. "He will not join us tonight on our way to South Africa as he will undergo a scan tomorrow as it was no use to do it now."
Van Marwijk said he had feared injuries from the Netherlands' final warmup match but had started to relax until second-half substitute Robben hobbled off in obvious pain two minutes from time.
"My first thought was this can't be true, the end the final warmup match, everyone is fit and then this," he added.
"We now have to wait. I can replace Robben until 24 hours before our opening match but as long as there is hope he recovers in time he will stay in the squad."
Robben, who came on as a second-half substitute, scored two goals before leaving the game. Robin van Persie, Wesley Sneijder, Mark van Bommel and Eljero Elia added the others.
Elsewhere, Nigeria's leading player John Obi Mikel was ruled out of the World Cup yesterday, joining a lengthening big-name casualty list with a severely bruised ankle.
He picked it up on his first day back in full training following a separate knee injury, a week before the month-long tournament kicks off.
The 23-year-old joins Ghana's Michael Essien (knee injury) and very probably the Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba (broken bone near elbow) on the sidelines, leaving the finals likely to miss three of its biggest African names.
Mikel learned yesterday that he would miss this month's showpiece after a scan showed he would not recover in time.
Nigerian Football Federation spokesman Idah Peterside said Nigeria's key midfielder had pulled up after some 50 minutes of training in Richards Bay on Friday with severe pain.
Chelsea's Mikel will return to London for further medical examinations at the weekend, the spokesman added.
On Friday, England captain Rio Ferdinand also joined a lengthening casualty list with a knee ligaments injury which rules him out of the tournament too.
Meanwhile, Japan defender Yasuyuki Konno will miss his country's opening World Cup game against Cameroon on June 14 because of a knee injury.
The 27-year-old suffered the injury to his right knee in Friday's 0-2 friendly defeat by Ivory Coast.
