Robinho in Milan for medical, Huntelaar departs
BRAZIL forward Robinho has arrived in Italy and will sign with AC Milan if the seven-time European champion let go of Marco Borriello, news reports said.
Robinho landed at Milan's Malpensa airport yesterday and underwent medical tests with Milan pending his possible transfer from Manchester City, the ANSA news agency reported.
"I hope to meet my new teammates and win the championships with them," ANSA quoted Robinho as saying outside the hospital.
"I'm very happy. Milan is an excellent club."
Juventus was interested in Borriello but the Turin club's general director Giuseppe Marotta said yesterday that it had dropped its bid for the forward. It was unclear if any other clubs would make a move for Borriello.
Robinho, who was sent on loan to Brazilian side Santos last season, could become Milan's second major signing in four days after Zlatan Ibrahimovic transferred from Barcelona on Saturday.
Milan opened Serie A with a 4-0 win over Lecce on Sunday and has greatly strengthened its chances of challenging five-time defending Serie A champion Inter Milan.
Robinho, who cost City 32.5 million pounds (US$50.07 million) when he joined from Real Madrid in September 2008, never settled in Manchester.
The final day of transfer activity got off to a slow start around Europe although Schalke 04 was busy, signing Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from AC Milan and Atletico Madrid midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado.
"It is true I never wanted to leave Milan but that changed when Zlatan came from Barcelona," Huntelaar said on his website.
Option
Schalke's Bundesliga rival VfB Stuttgart signed Mauro Camoranesi from Juventus for one year with an option to renew. The 33-year-old midfielder won the 2006 World Cup with Italy. Olympique Lyon also signed Senegal defender Pape Diakhate on a season-long loan deal from Dynamo Kiev.
Loan arrangements seemed to be the order of the day with Croatia goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa completing his move from Spartak Moscow to Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long deal. Pletikosa, 31, appeared in the World Cup finals of 2002 and 2006 as well as Euro 2008.
Ghana forward Asamoah Gyan was also at Sunderland for talks ahead of a proposed move from Stade Rennes. He could sign for a club record fee of around 12 million pounds (US$18.49 million).
