Robinho set to join Brazil clan at Guangzhou

Robinho is being heavily linked with Guangzhou Evergrande after the former Real Madrid striker announced his departure from Brazil club Santos.

According to Xinhua news agency, Brazilian news portal Uol reported that the Chinese Super League defending champion, managed by Luiz Felipe Scolari, has offered Brazilian compatriot Robinho a three-year contract with a monthly salary of 1 million euros (US$1.11 million).

The 31-year-old has rich experience in Europe, including stints with Real, Manchester City and AC Milan. Last year, he returned to Santos from Milan on a one-year loan, scoring 17 goals in 41 matches.

In a statement, Robinho thanked Santos fans for their support and respect, while praising the club鈥檚 coaching staff and players. 鈥淯nfortunately I wasn鈥檛 able to renew my contract, but Santos will always be in my heart,鈥 he wrote.

Three clubs were reported to be chasing Robinho 鈥 Evergrande, Mexican side Queretaro and Brazil鈥檚 Serie A defending champion Cruzeiro. According to a report by Mexican media 鈥24 Horas鈥 Robinho won鈥檛 be heading to the Mexican club, while the CSL side was offering an 鈥渁ttractive contract鈥.

Evergrande has never hid its liking for South American-style football. Last month, it replaced Italian head coach Fabio Cannavaro with Brazilian World Cup winning manager Scolari, who was understood to be negotiating directly with Robinho.

If Robinho joins Guangzhou, he will become the club鈥檚 sixth Brazilian player after Rene Junior, Ricardo Goulart, Alan, Elkeson and newly signed former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Paulinho.
