Roma denied by late Siena equalizer
A LATE equalizer from Siena defender Roberto Vitiello piled the pressure on AS Roma coach Luis Enrique as the Spaniard's team was held to a 1-1 home draw by the Serie A newcomer on Thursday.
Vitiello swept the ball home with two minutes to go after Franco Brienza's shot had struck the upright, earning Siena a deserved point after an open encounter at the Stadio Olimpico. Roma took the lead through new signing Pablo Osvaldo in the 25th minute but was never comfortable and Luis Enrique said afterwards his side had become anxious.
The draw left him without a win from his opening three matches in charge and put Roma and Siena on two points.
"My analysis of the match can't be positive because of the result," the Spaniard said. "We are far from where we want to be but I still have faith."
In Spain, Roque Santa Cruz scored twice to lead 10-man Real Betis to a thrilling 4-3 win over Zaragoza as the newly promoted Andalusian side moved top of the Spanish league standings.
Goals from Santa Cruz and Salva Sevilla, from the penalty spot, after just 12 minutes set Betis on its way to match the best ever start of a promoted club with four straight victories.
Former Celtic defender Efrain Juarez pulled one back for Zaragoza before halftime, but Benat Etxebarria stroked home another penalty in the 47th and Santa Cruz headed in his second goal minutes later.
Earlier, an injury-time winner from veteran striker Walter Pandiani gave Espanyol a 1-0 victory over Getafe as the Barcelona-based side kept its perfect home record.
Betis leads the standings with 12 points. Valencia, which drew 2-2 with defending champion Barcelona on Wednesday, is two points behind.
