Roma sinks Atalanta to topple Inter
AS Roma took a big step forward in its drive for a surprise Italian Serie A title yesterday when it beat relegation-threatened visitor Atalanta 2-1 to take the top spot from champion Inter Milan.
Mirko Vucinic's and Marco Cassetti's first-half goals put Roma on 68 points, one more than Inter, which drew 2-2 at Fiorentina on Saturday as its domestic form falters under the stress of reaching the Champions League semifinals.
Third-placed AC Milan's title hopes diminished after it slipped four points off the pace with five games remaining despite coming from 0-2 down to draw 2-2 at home with Catania, thanks to Marco Borriello's double.
Fourth-placed Palermo strengthened its bid for Italy's final Champions League place yesterday when Fabrizio Miccoli struck twice to help it rally past Chievo Verona 3-1.
Elsewhere, it was: Lazio 3, Bologna 2; Juventus 1, Cagliari 0; Udinese 2, Livorno 0; and Siena 3, Bari 2
On Saturday, Per Kroldrup poked home to earn Fiorentina a point in the 82nd minute just a minute after Samuel Eto'o looked to have snatched a comeback win for the champion.
Inter's Argentina forward Diego Milito had scored in the 75th too cancel out Brazilian Keirrison's opener for the host in the 11th.
Inter looked to be cruising to a fifth straight scudetto in mid-February when it led by nine points.
Earlier, Napoli's hopes of taking the Champions League qualifying place took a knock when it lost 2-3 at home to Parma. Sixth-placed Napoli stayed on 49 points.
