Ronaldo fires for Corinthians
A RONALDO strike gave Corinthians a 1-0 win over Cerro Porteno but Flamengo went down 1-2 to Universidad de Chile on a night of mixed fortunes for Brazilian sides in the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday.
Corinthians, bidding for the title for the first time with former Brazil World Cup winners Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos in its team, went ahead in the 41st minute of the Group One match in Asuncion, Paraguay, when Ronaldo tapped in from a corner.
Cerro midfielder Jorge Britez was sent off eight minutes from the end for a violent foul.
The win put Corinthians four points clear of Uruguay's Nacional at the top of the group.
Flamengo, which made a lightning visit to Santiago because of fears of another earthquake in Chile, must have wished it had not traveled at all.
Midfielder Felipe Seymour hit the winner in the 55th to put "The U" top of Group Eight, a point ahead of the Brazilian champion.
Central and southern Chile were hit by a quake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale on February 27 that left hundreds dead and massive damage.
Universidad de Chile gave its fans in the 25,000 crowd on Wednesday the joy of victory to distract them from the devastation of the last fortnight.
Striker Eduardo Vargas headed the Chilean side in front two minutes before halftime. Flamengo, for whom striker Adriano hit the bar early on, equalized through Rodrigo Alvim in the 51st but it hardly had time to celebrate before falling behind again to Seymour's strike.
Another Chilean side, Universidad Catolica, secured a point in the same group with a 0-0 draw away to FC Caracas in Venezuela.
Caracas is bottom of the group with one point, while Universidad Catolica has two.
In the day's other match, Mexico's Monterrey and Once Caldas of Colombia drew 2-2.
Once Caldas moved two points clear of Sao Paulo at the top of Group Two with eight points from four games, with Monterrey in third place on five. Sao Paulo has a game in hand and was hosting Nacional of Paraguay yesterday.
